Background of the Study
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) have become a significant concern in workplace health, particularly for office workers who spend prolonged hours seated. Poor posture, repetitive movements, and inadequate workstation setups are common contributors to the development of MSDs among office workers (Williams et al., 2024). In Gombe State, like many other regions, the rapid urbanization and shift toward office-based work have resulted in an increase in complaints of discomfort and physical pain among employees. The posture-related nature of these disorders can lead to long-term health complications, including chronic back pain, neck strain, and joint problems, all of which negatively impact an employee’s ability to perform effectively.
Posture-related MSDs often stem from a lack of ergonomic awareness and the absence of proper workstation design. Studies have highlighted that sitting for extended periods, especially in poorly designed chairs or desks, can place significant strain on the musculoskeletal system (Thompson & Harland, 2023). The rise in sedentary lifestyles has exacerbated this issue, particularly in office environments where employees are often unaware of the detrimental effects of poor posture. This challenge is particularly pertinent to Gombe State, where limited studies have examined the prevalence of posture-related MSDs among office workers.
Previous research has established that ergonomic interventions, such as proper seating arrangements and posture training, can significantly reduce the incidence of posture-related MSDs and improve employee well-being (Barker & Morgan, 2025). However, despite the availability of ergonomic solutions, their adoption and implementation in Gombe State remain limited, raising concerns about the health of office workers in the region. Thus, understanding the extent to which posture-related MSDs affect office workers in Gombe State and identifying practical solutions are critical for promoting employee health and productivity.
Statement of the Problem
Posture-related musculoskeletal disorders have become a growing concern among office workers in Gombe State. Despite the increasing recognition of these health issues globally, there is limited research specifically examining the prevalence and impact of posture-related MSDs in the region’s office environment. Employees in Gombe State are often exposed to poor posture due to inadequate workstations, which may contribute to discomfort, pain, and decreased productivity. This study seeks to assess the prevalence of posture-related MSDs among office workers in Gombe State and explore potential solutions to mitigate these disorders.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of posture-related musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Gombe State.
2. To identify the main risk factors contributing to posture-related MSDs among office workers in Gombe State.
3. To propose effective interventions to reduce the incidence of posture-related MSDs among office workers in the region.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of posture-related musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Gombe State?
2. What are the main risk factors contributing to posture-related MSDs among office workers in Gombe State?
3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce posture-related MSDs among office workers in Gombe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a high prevalence of posture-related musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Gombe State.
2. Poor workstation design and prolonged sitting are significant risk factors for posture-related musculoskeletal disorders among office workers in Gombe State.
3. Ergonomic interventions will reduce the incidence of posture-related MSDs among office workers in Gombe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on office workers within Gombe State, Nigeria, and will assess those who work in corporate environments where sitting for long periods is common. The study will exclude other workers, such as those in manual labor sectors. A limitation of this study may include the self-reporting bias of participants when identifying their posture-related discomfort. Additionally, the study will not examine long-term effects or the persistence of MSDs following intervention.
Definitions of Terms
• Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs): Disorders affecting the muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments that are often caused by poor posture or repetitive movements.
• Posture: The position in which a person holds their body while sitting, standing, or performing activities.
• Ergonomics: The science of designing the workplace to fit the capabilities and limitations of employees, minimizing physical strain.
• Workstation Design: The arrangement of furniture and equipment in an office environment to promote comfort and reduce physical stress.
